      #31169 - 26/05/2009 20:06

Hi everyone,

I am planning on doing a first aid course as I am an experiences mountain biker. A friend told me me that these guys were excellent http://www.highpeakfirstaid.co.uk/. Has anyone got any thoughts on this?

Cheers

First aid is certainly something that is worth knowing, even more so if it has been specifically catered twoards injuries you are likely to incurr during a sport you are doing often.

Let me know how much it costs if you go for it. It's local to me so I'm quite interested.

Basic things - done well, are what make the difference, the main thing You need to be able to do is...

1 - manage until help arrives,
2 - get help ASAP

So, where are you riding; alone or with others, are the first things to consider, then, how much weight are you prepared to add in order to cover most minor to middling incidents that may occur.

Most of my injuries have involved cuts of one type or another, either from the big ring or landing in trees, so I always have just water in the camelbak (for cleaning out wounds).

I carry a large sterile dressing, some 7.5 x 7.5 low adherent wound pads, roll of micropore tape for securing the above, couple of pairs of nitrile gloves, 2x space blankets (about 2" x 3" until removed from packaging, then 1.3m x 2m) 1 large rolled SAMsplint and 3x triangular bandages (for broad-folds) and an eyepatch dressing.

Also, a few smiley frog sticky plasters may come in handy, esp if taking young kids out.

tie a whistle to yourself somewhere you can reach with either hand, should you be catapulted from the bike and end up in a snotty heap.

shouting for help may not be an available option!

... --- ... (S.O.S) or 6 blasts with 1 minute between is the mountain emergency signal.

Can't think of much else off the top of my head, other than a full charged mobile can work wonders for your peace of mind, so long as your local trail centre gets coverage - Whinlatter is a bit hit & miss.

The other thing to Always do (esp if riding alone) is tell someone sensible where you are going, when you will be back etc and when they should raise the alarm if you do not get back to them to tell you you are home safe (DONT FORGET TO CALL THEM !)

Stay safe

I was at Stile Cop about 2 1/2 weeks ago and a I heard moans and groans??? I quickly made my way towards the source and found a guy had dislocated and broken his shoulder (didn't know this at the time) He couldn't stop in time and slammed into a tree with his shoulder!!! luckily for him I had decided to take my mini first aid kit with me as somewhere to put my keys and phone incase I had an accident! I did first aid course years ago but couldn't remember a thing, however I managed to make him a sling good enough to last to get him off the trail until an ambulance came (in about 3 minutes to be exact!) he was gutted cause he was supposed to be racing at Hopton 3 days later! instead he was in the crowd with me and many others instead! pictures here http://www.27gears.com/pearcerd2dh.html

you can see him on the far left of the guys in the background in this picture with a white sling on (poor bloke)

I did REC2 with these folks -
http://www.training-expertise.co.uk/

It's focussed towrds first aid in remote locations where you're further from help than usual - perfect info for mountain bikers.

Cheers
