Broken ankle
      #29759 - 13/05/2009 15:47

I am currently recovering from a broken ankle following a motorbike accident. I may as well have been on my Marin because I was travelling in traffic at about 15MPH when a car pulled out and smashed into the side of me!
That was 10 weeks ago and I am still awaiting the removal of the cast.
Now I know that this is going to be a long road to recovery but I want to get back on my bike and get back into fitness. Obviously I will take my time and follow the doctors and physiotherapists advice, but I was wondering what advice anyone else can provide on ankle fitness exercises if they have been in a similar situation?
Thanks for any advice,
Cheers
Karl

WTTF batman. IMHO i would wait for physio input because if your break includes ligament damage doing the wrong exercises could lead to further damage. However a good one for general strengthening of the ankle is to stand on the affected leg and move a football around it with your other foot. Wait until you get the OK though. 10 weeks in a cast sounds as though they're playing it ulta safe (but then I'm not your consultant), hope you've got a follow up soon it's bound to be attracting unwanted wrinkled noses by now and that knitting needle will be going blunt.

Now that would have been a great idea! - Unfortunately my ankle has been casted so that the foot points down so I would not have been able to pedal comfortably, besides with a full length cast on I have not been able to bend my knee!

Thankfully on Friday they removed the full length plaster cast. Unfortunately the bone has still not healed so I have been re-fitted with a new fibreglass wrap cast and told to come back in 6 weeks! Fortunately the new cast is a below the knee cast and I have been told to start bending my knee and putting some weight on the toes. After 10 weeks without bending my knee has other ideas and I can only bend my leg to about 80 degrees. After that at the moment it is just too painful to bend.

This is definately going to take some time to get back on my bike properly. I just hope that the doctor and physio recommend that I do some training on a bike and then I can sue the person who hit me for a turbo trainer!

Cheers for the comments

Karl

Hi Karl. Sounds like it's gonna be a wee while before your back on the bike mate. Your knee will come back with exercise, but when the cast comes off your achilles is going to take as long if not longer because, in the equine cast it is fixed in a shortened position, and over time it gets used to being there so it's gonna need stretching too. Ask your consultant why it was cast like this and how long it likely to be before your back biking again and if some vitamin/mineral supplement will help with the non union issue (get advice first). Could have been casted that way due to fracture type, or, to aid union, or, it could be that there is some ligament/tendon damage, but he/she will be best placed to advise you on this. Best advice i could give mate is if you've got a question write it down cause, sure as it's going to rain as soon as I pull on my helmet, you'll forget during consultation. hope this helps a little, not the best news I know but keep up with the exercises and you'll get there.

If your knee is weak I can give you some advice from what my pysio told me when on one of the several occasions my knee twisted badly. If you sit on the sofa, just sit there bending your knee to fully flex and fully extended... If it busts don push any further, gentle and slow is the way to go. Once I'd got my movement and a little more stength back, then hang a bag of sugar off you foot in a carrier bag and repeat...

Please do check with your consultant whther he wants you exersizing in this way or not, I'm not a dr. I can tell you that this vastly improved my recovery time and seriously reduced muscle wastage. You can ring the hossie and ask the consultants secratary to ask on you behalf if you don't have an appointment any time soon.

Thanks for the replies.
At the moment I am doing exactly what the doctor tells me to do which is to sit at home with my leg raised and rest. To ease my knee he has just told me to keep flexing it and keep trying to go a bit further than is confortable, but without straining it too much ... so that is what I am doing. Not only do I want to get back to cycling again, but as a countryside ranger I really need my ankle to be working 100% when I eventually get back to work as I spend most of my day on my feet.

Yes, my ankle will be even worse when the cast is eventually removed, as my wife keeps reminding me. She is a nurse so that helps.
Fortunately my doctor is very good and has explained everything well. My ankle was fixed in the position for good reasons. The breaks in my tibia and fibula are too close to the end of the bones to allow the use of fixing plates. By fixing my ankle in an inclined position allows the bones to line up accurately and they will then hopefully heal. Unfortunately if it does not heal the I may need another operation to add external fixators into place or maybe even to perform a bone graft!!!

Fingers crossed all will heal with time.

Karl

is your new cast removable
if so you could make use of your local swimming pool it could be a good way of keeping the muscles from weakening as well as help you maintain some level of fitness for when you are able to ride again.
I swam instead of rideing for six months after breaking 3 bones in my foot a few years ago but you injury does sound far worse than mine.
good luck
