Where is it , I saw the last part of countryfile on the TV and they were at a new devon venue for biking in some woods . All i saw was some serious downhill action but wondered if it was an all round trail centre or just a place for downhill nutters

Countryfile have been giving quite a lot of exposure to trail centres recently. They have also been to Whinlatter recently. Keep it coming!!

the downhill centre is just outside tavistock you can only gain access if you join the club. there was a link on www.thisisdevon.co.uk a while back

Nothing there now . I guessed it was Tavy way as i saw a mention of Dartmoor cycles in the program ,never been there but judjing by their ads they are a downhill racing shop . Was hoping the venue was the sort of place you could take the family for a days riding and then find some more fun routes while they rest . doesn't sound like it

Hi kernow, try haldon hill up by exeter. I've been reseraching it the last few days, haven't been up there yet but want to go check it out. It's got a red graded XC trail, freeride area and family trails.

Hi nick i have been looking at the details on the net it looks pretty good , but the family routes seemd a bit short which made it a long way to go for us for just a couple of hours riding . I have to get my head round the colour grading system , I don't mind serious off road but don't want to come across big jumps and blind drop offs with no warning or alternative safe route .

I've been in touch with Nathharper on here, as in a couple of his posts he says that it's his local trails. He advised me that the red route is good for a lightish weight xc hardtail. As far as I'm aware, if you stay away from the freer ride track/area you shouldn't encounter any drop offs/jumps. You're right though it is quite a way to go for a route that is 8 km long, but I'm definately taking my bike with me when I next have to go that way.
Here's a link for you with some info: http://www.haldonfreeride.org/pages/cross.php
Also, while searching for that link I've just found this: http://www.exmtb.co.uk/routes/index.htm
It looks quite interesting, as it got some routes at Woodbury common (not sure where this is yet), I've not had a proper look yet though.

Just had another look at the Haldon website . Its for too short to make it worth the journey , but a good place if its on yer doorstep. Especially for me to leave Bodmin moor and cross Dartmoor to get there.
Woodbury common looks like a good place to ride . I have driven across it many times , just head out of Exeter towards Sidmouth and you will cross it

Here you go Dale:
http://www.woodlandriders.com/
You need to be a member to ride there, but I dropped an email to them and got one back saying I could go for a one off freeby ride up there at some point to decide if I want to pay membership or not. Drop them a line and I'm sure they will say the same to you.
