Calorie intake
      #27557 - 23/04/2009 15:14

This is a question, i am going to carry out the scottish coast to coast in June (Creetown to Edinburgh) and i am wondering how many calories i would burn off and how much food i would have to take in (counter balance)....currently i am doing long rides and eating normal amounts, normal meals....and doing ok but i am not counting the calories.

any advice would be great or if there is any Mathematicians that can work it out that would be perfect.

mileage is 185, over 6 days.

cheers
Dazza

hi Dazza,
its hard to say exactly how many you'll need a day as i presume each day will be at a different intensity, but say you cycle about 30 miles a day at around 10mph, therefore 3 hours a day. i think i once say somewhere that you burn about 160calories every 20 mins, so over three hours that makes 1,440 cals, i think the recommended intake for a male is about 2,000-2,500 cals per day, so upping your intake to something like 4,000 should be sufficient, loadsa chocolate it is then!

Whatever the calorie intake - make sure you up the protein intake. You will need it to ensure you recover as much as possible for the following day.

Quick calculation on another website - based on 75 kg (around 12 stone) person doing 30 miles in 3 hours you will burn 3000 calories

would the calorie's burnt not depend on the other things??

your weight would be a major factor, also how hilly is the ride.

my advice would be to eat little and often, NEVER EVER wait until your hungry to eat, by then its to late. 3 hours ride at 10mph is not guna burn you out to an extent where fatigue becomes a problem.

as steve said protien up when your finished ready for the next day.

energy drink is a good way to keep going to.

Hi Dazza

Not sure how many calories u will burn could be a lot,

On the food side of life try and get hold of some military rations they hold around 4500 Cals per 24 hour box and are pretty light weight and easily packed for obvious reasons, which will make your life alot easier.

Do you know anyone in the forces that can help you out with 6 x 24 hour ration packs?

Im "Overseas" at the moment so cant really help except with advice but im back end of may, if you get stuck drop me an email hutch093@hotmail.com i might be able to make a few phone calls up your neck of the woods

I agree with green, 10mph for 3 hrs will leave you really weak.... it did me (alhtough I'm no iron man, more lard boy).. Eat protein as you ride is also a good tip, you wil lneed it to counter muscle degradation, plus if you run out of sugar then you bodyu will start using that for fuel, better than it starting to eat the muscle in your legs to keep you going. Gnaw on some jerky or dry sausage at every avilaable oppertunity.

You'll need a massive, I do mean massive water intake, dehydration will stop you functioning and lead to exhaustion quite quickly. I'd be stocking up on enough energy drink for a week if i was you.

Little and often isa good tip, that way you tend to loose less blood to your digestion, you also are continually picking up sugars ideally at about the same rate you are burning them.

I'd get some electrolytes too (liver salts, rehydrtions sachets etc), they salts will help stop you getting cramp, you loose a lot when you sweat for 4+hrs a day.

Hiya, just to add i have done 5/6 hours rides all off road and got about 5 miles to go and things go a bit wrong, sugar levels drop a little. mars bars work ok, but i would say thats a quick fix. the drink side os ok, MBR did a good reciepe in one of their issue which works a treat.

thanks for all the advice.

i wouldnt eat too much choco when on the bike, i'd stick to gels and energy bars, i like powerbars myself but its all down to personal prefrence.

also water isnt enough on its own you really need to be adding sis or something similar to it. or any isotonic drink, they contain carbs so you are taking on energy when your drinking plus they hydrate you alot better than water on its own! good luck tho

Dalby is a really good ride....you know when its finished. I live near Gisburn Forest which will be extended to 22 miles in July...hopefully will be on the same lines.

Just done the Tour of Ingleborough, thats a hard ride but the weather was fantastic....26 miles.

Going back to what gorehound said.....some of the group eat porridge and swear by it, so might try that option for this sat.
