Typical ride??
      #23488 - 23/03/2009 12:49

I am interested to find out what is the concensus from the forum on what a typical ride is in terms of length, duration etc.
There seems to be a whole host of ability, fitness, enthusiasm on here, so what is the typical distance, terrain, duration people are covering on a typical ride (I stress the word typical as not really interested in bragging rights for one offs )

My typical weekend ride will be 2 to 3 hours duration and cover about 15 to 20 miles depending on the terrain and the weather. I'm lucky where I live as I have all kinds of choices available.

My favorites are mountain tracks and tramroads, rocky bridleways and the forestry roads. We also have two Sustans tarmac cycle routes right outside my door as well as a 30 odd mile long canal towpath and all kind of interconnecting tracks and trails. Roll on Saturday!!!

It depends on what mood I'm in, normally I'll do one or two laps of Cwm Carn red or Afan red, but if I'm away for the weekend I'll try and get in two big rides (50-80km each) and a night ride in the weekend

I try to get out at least twice a week for about an hour, covering a distance of 18km. Most of it is dirt track and single track. On weekends I extend the route to about 30km and add another 250-300m altitude, but usually only manage to get out on Sunday morning. (I'm not sure of the total climb, as I havent really sat down with the map and worked it out)- might do that now....

Still building up my fitness after too long out of the saddle....

So mainly Bridleways at the moment, and the ocassional trail centre.

Trying to build up the distances and the stamina up hills etc!

I reckon a good rides around 30-35km with as near as 1500m of ascent as possible. Takes around 4 hours.

40-45km if its flat or upto 600m.

Cheeky evening rides around an hour and a half and 20km, say tiwce a week if possible. Varying the climbing depending on buddies etc.

I do notice though that the fitter you get the further you need to go for a decent work out.

Not much compared to some of the folks on here...

Probably a maximum of 15 - 20km really, over 3 - 5hrs. That's getting increased fairly quickly at the moment though. Busy paying for a winter off the bike - NEVER AGAIN!

I recently read that you lose the level of fitness you attain in half the time it took to get it!

So if you build up over 6 months it's all gone in 3, scary

i have no idea how far i ride as i dont and wont use a bike computer.

i know in the car my drive to work is 8 miles so when i ride to work i ride 8 miles.

on the way home i go the river way and would guess its about 10 to 12 miles with 1 or 2 tough steep climbs in, if im not close to tears when i get to the top i aint rode it properly.

i dont have time to do long rides so that is why i ride hard on the short ones, this does help when a longer ride comes along.

my favourite rides are trail centres so i try and get 2 in per month depending on baby sitters.

now the lighter nights are here i will throw in a longer home ride, about 20 miles.

I totally agree. I'm an average rider at best, but did notice that after a couple of weeks off the bike, sections I could ride quite easily suddenly became difficult.

I now try to ride more regularly to offset this. The same applies in the gym.

Once you start , you cant stop or in my case, too afraid to stop!!

From my own experience, I did the odd ride over the winter, but concentrated on weekly spinning sessions and aerobic sessions in the gym.
Whilst this has maintained my basic fitness and gentle slopes etc are not a problem, I really struggled though on the short steeper climbs this last weekend, both in terms of breathing and muscle pain.

The ride was about 15 miles in total, to the top of a local hill and back (exact climb unknown), and my legs and breathing were fine immediately after and I have had no aches

I guess there is no substitute for the real thing, and simply putting the miles and climbs in

Not a health freak so I either ride or I don't, no pilates class for me!!

Commute 4 days a week, shortest is 6 mile there and back - longest is 15ish mile on a work run.

Weekend will be either 15 - 30 miles approx once a month off road, or 25 - 50 if road bike goes out.

Off road takes anywhere from 2 -4 hours, on road takes 1 1/2 - 3 hours.

If I go for the top end, (30 offroad, 50 on), legs start to go. Hope the spring summer season increases stamina!!

every night street ride for 1-2 hours flat out sprints

try to get some technical riding in- practise manuals, skinnies, back hops etc.

anything like that just makes you more impressive riding around town and increases your balance/ confidence

helps with motivation too; seen as i do street and dirt im used to falling off and getting back up again and again, so on the trail you're always thinking 'if i did that why can't i do this' etc.

helps a lot.

at the moment my normal rides seem to be around the 10mile mark...alot of road, some off road, alot of climbing moreso to gain some fitness and stamina up steeper hills....seems to be working the more im doing it the more im finding myself going that extra distance to get home....

i have an idea for you craig, an idea that will get you out on your bike and you will still be able to eat your tea.

'have your cake and eat it' you might say.

i kind of 'win win' situation.

'the best of both worlds' to put it another way.

right, what you need to do is go out on your bike then, and this is the real brains bit, when you get back all hungry simply pop your tea in the microwave for 2 mins and eat it.

in the words of hannible 'i love it when a plan comes together'.

Just recently, no trail riding at all STILL waiting for a new rear hub for the trail bike!!

So my typical ride at the moment consists of really good fun DH on the SX Trail, Push up/Bomb back down, average time 2 hours, average length 1-2 minutes per run/ 10 minutes to push back up

The good thing about DH is, the bits of the trail that are really good fun but you only get the one shot at it until the next time you ride the trail, you can keep going back up and having a go at it again until you get it dialed

I ride DH cause it only takes one ball to play football
