If you cut out eating rubbish, and cut back on alcohol then the weight will drop. If you eat less calories than you expend you'll loose weight.

Depends on your lifestyle....
My eating had become excessive, snacking frequently etc.

So I just cut out snacking, reduced my portion sizes. but still eat roughly whatever I want. I cut out fizzy drinks and alcohol for about a month too that helped at first.

Since then I've been less concerned but generally I try to maintain a healthy-ish diet and try to rack up rides every other day. especially focusing on blasting up the hills and really getting the heart pounding.

So basically to summarise.... experiment and find out what works for you. I've lost nearly 2 stone following my 'plan'. have a play around, trying things for a couple of weeks and then maybe changing if thats not working. but remember that with the cycling you will need an increased ammount of energy per day, don't go starving yourself!

you need to push your self every ride, after i do a bike ride and really push my self the next time i do it i don't break a sweet. try going up a gear on the hills, dont stop at the top ride over them, little things like that all help to loose weight. also dont starve your self on your bike, you need to eat, make sure you take a banana with you an orange and maybe a snack bar but cycling will get the weight off you, my dad used to be about 20st he got mad for biking and got down to like 14st, but he really did put the miles in.

Hi Beds,

I'm going to disagree with most of the above. If this is the only new thing you're doing then no you won't loose weight just by doing that, that's the bad news.

The good news is that you will loose inches. Muscle weighs more than fat so to begin with what you loose in fat will be replaced by toning your muscles and redistributing your body shape. Then there's the cardio vascular benefits too. Also being fitter means you will metabolise at a higher rate so that could make you hungrier and therefore eat more. Viscious circle!

Ben makes a good point at trying different things and not going hungry.

Stuff that works for me has been try to eat less than 10g of fat before your evening meal. I actualy got this down to less than 5g of fat during brekfast and lunch then a normal evening meal where it's pretty hard to do the rest of you GDA in one meal. Cut out crisps and snacks etc.

Another tip is remove carbs in favour of protein, this fills you up more and takes longer to metabalise. An average sized male should be eating around 180g of protein a day which is really tricky and bad news for chickens, but imagine how full you would be if you ate that lot, you wouldn't need many spuds on your plate.

Drink water. We frequently confuse being thirsty for being hungry that's why you can eat a load of biccies and still want more. So if you get peckish drink a glass of water first and wait a few minutes to see if the hunger pangs subside. We should drink 2lts of water a day and this really helps towards it.

All of the above had tango saying I'd lost weight since we last met in November Cheers Tango - I celebrated with a huge Chinese meal last night

Finally rack up the cycling, it's fun and keeps you fit

^^ DITTO ^^

Up the protein, reduce the fat, drink more in place of food. Get out and have fun.

Muscle weighs more than fat, but you will see dramatic changes in the next couple of months!!

Have fun!!!!

Agree with most of the above,

Most importanly it's what is put in the "bin on the chin", change that, combined with exersize and your shape will change, for the better.

If you use a gym, try spinning - bike focussed and intense!!!

Big fly wheel - single-speed - you stop pedalling and it stops instantly. Continuous adjustment of resistance.

Better saddles - you don't need to have an a*se that is 5 miles wide to be comfortable as you would on the gym bikes. More adjustment on position of saddle handle bars. And they are SPD compatible!!

It's all about the intensity really - you go as hard as you can. You sprint as hard as you can, you rest. Challenge yourself is the mantra!

http://www.muscleandstrength.com/articles/diet-nutrition.html

im in the complete oposite situation where im trying to put on weight but i have to follow the same principles or i will just put on fat ,altho cause im ectomor[hic i need to pile on the carbs

and like has already been said dont be to worried about what the scales say cause muscle weighs more than fat and believe it or not these guys are about the same weight

Nothing like trail riding - far more intense - 45 minutes to an hour and the sweat is pouring off you - lactate is giving your legs pain.... It has added power to my general riding, so good in combination with getting out there!

Lactate is correct - I was a biochemist in a previous life. Lactic acid combined with other stuff would give lactate - e.g. sodium lactate.

Then there is 'to lactate' the verb = produce milk...

is spinning the same as Aerobiking ? I did an aerobiking session the other day for the first time . My mate does it a lot and its done lots for his fitness and wieght loss .

As for the spinning I can't say i enjoyed it very much . Pretending there is a hill to go up and increasing the load needs more imagination than I have , worst part was the lack of fresh air and not having an idea o what you had achieved . If they had a mile counter or speedo etc then at least there would be something to judge you performance on . Thats just me though give it a go its worked for my mate .
