Exercise Bike
      #22271 - 16/03/2009 17:17

I have an exercise bike and want to put it to good use to complement my proper riding. especially now while its still getting dark fairly early, not always possible to get out on my proper bike.

What is the best way to increase my fitness....

Long sessions maintaining a moderate cadence?
or shorter more intense sessions?

I'd mainly like to increase my stamina / endurance... but also increase my strength slightly too.

or am I miles away from the proper routine?

Thanks in Advance
Ben

Im sure the others will give you some more expert advice... but I find that an execise bike gives you a chance to brush up on pedalling techniques. eg - as long as you have pedal straps you can do one leg pedalling, concentraing on the up pull rather than the down force. Alternate legs - but dont overdo it at first..

Yeah I guess, however I currently use flats on my actual bike. so the up pull isn't really essential currently.

I do have some clipless pedals but as with many others I just couldn't really get used to them, perhaps I didn't give them long enough! perhaps I should give them another go! I had a few falls (nothing serious) and found myself un-clipping far too early prior to stopping!

Maybe I'll try them out on my old bike, somewhere fairly soft!

Hi ben,

See if you can adapt some of the turbo training sessions on the Tracx website.

As you are always just about to go up a gear, change cadance or friction you certainly don't get board and I've never done one without loosing over a pound in body weight at least. The important thing whilst you're doing them is to keep the cadance even if you drop a gear or reduce the slope but most of all complete the entire routine.

These are good for basic fitness bricks http://www.tacx.com/mediatheek/files/pdf...rainers_112.pdf

But the whole hog is here http://www.tacx.com/beleef+tacx.php?lang...p=Cycletrainers

I tend to build up the resistance over the duration of the exercise (upto the max the bike will allow) and then drop down to the lowest for the last 10 mins to cool down (normally do an hour every other night). IMHO this is the best way to improve stamina and fitness and believe me I've tried everything !!!

Exercise Bike really helped...

Went to Dalby at the weekend and finished the 23 Mile red route in 3:17.19 (excluding breaks - my comp and gps do auto start/stop) average speed 7mph, max 22mph.

I was flying up the hills, with the only problems being technique.
Now I just need to get quicker on the downhills... being clipped in freaked me out a few times!

But the combination of increased fitness and my new full sus bike made the whole thing so much more fun!

Cheers Guys
