Hello, i've finally managed to convince the Mrs to let me take my bike away with us next time we go abroad. I'm still going to a standard holiday resort (i'd be pushing my luck to stretch to a specific mountain bike holiday!)Keeping the bike in the hotel room when not in use. Who and what do i need to ask when i take my bike abroad? Do i need special insurance, what do I tell the airline/hotel,will there be extra charges? Please help i don't know where to start!

Hey Itchy
Never taken a bike abroad but my parents live near Granada in Spain so I will be soonish?
You defo need a bike bag for the plane journey Plus need to check howmch weight you are allowed to carry and how much baggage you can take per person i.e will the bike count as your only piece of baggage? the more expensive airlines usually have more allowance in my limited flying experience (Virgin Atlantic are pretty good to america, 23Kg per case and 2x cases per person)
Hope this helps?
When you find out please post your findings so we all know!

Hi itchy,
There's quite a few posts on these forums regarding taking bikes on planes, Tracey certainly had some issues with airlines and from what I've seen would reccommend a hard case over a cheaper soft one.
The brutalities of the baggage handlers aside I've taken my bikes down to Austria (Sallbach/Hinterglemm) but decided it was better and easier to drive down! I'll be flying next time though and will probably take one bike. Squeezy Jet will allow sports equipment on flights and quote terms and prices on their website. They do make mention though that only the bike can be stored in the bag and all your clobber should go in your normal luggage. Although it has to be said that it's a close call about having your dearly beloved (and the Mrs to help carry your gear) with you versus hiring something out there.

Cheers guys, what do i tell the insurance co? I understand i could hire out there but i know i'll be riding a steel framed 1980's 30 kilo reject bone shaker that's on it's last legs...( did it in turkey-not pleasant!) Hard bike case is a great idea....And yes i probably will be more worried about my nearest and dearest stuck down there in the hold area.....Do you think my wife will swap places?

Spain my be a bit different to Turkey, I was surprised when we hired a couple of decent Fuji hardtails on Fuerteventura, XT equiped etc and a reasonable price. have you Googled bike shops near Granada, would have thought that MTB'ing would be quite popular there. As for insurance check you've got personal accident included on your travel insurance whilst MTB'ing, I've seen a few policies that don't cover it! Not sure about damage or theft but I'm sure the insurance companies in the back of MBR will oblige, given the sufficient amount of readies.
