Suggestions for a decent bike rack please?
      #1595 - 07/05/2008 16:46

Can anyone recommend a decent bike rack? I'm looking to carry at least 2 hardtails on the back of a Skoda Octavia saloon. I can it both inside, but I'm fed up with the hassel and the mess. I don't have a tow-bar so itill need to attach to the bodywork/boot lid. Any recommendations would be appreciated.

mmm, there is a sarris bones ( check spelling ) this is a good rack and fits just about anything going. i drive a golf and i have 'thule clip-on' wow, this rack is the dogs!! it has no straps, it opens, clips onto the top of my boot then under the bottom of my boot, pull 2 handles down and qharter twist 2 knobs. job done. it takes about 20 to 30 seconds and its rock solid. google 'thule' i bought mine from the roofbox company i think. you can type in your car to check compatabilty. if it does not fit look at other thule racks, mine really is better than perfect.

Thanks mucker, I checked the Thule and Saris sites with limited success...Thule only fits the Skoda estate and the Saris doen't recognise Skoda, that said it does fit a VW Passat which isn't vastly different. Anyone seen a taxi with a bike rack of late?

my mate had a bmw sallon then a bmw estate and the saris fitted both.did you check the thule site for different racks. there will be ones to fit your car, it depends on how quickly you want to attatch the rack. i hate straps. i suppose halfords are worth a look and there is bound to be a halfords store close to you to have a look at the rack.

I did but Thule only seemed to detail the Octavia estate in all of them which seems a bit odd? I think I'll send Saris and Thule an email. I'm sure I can make any rack fit but I'd prefer the piece of mind knowing it's meant to be on the way it is and isn't going to fall off half way to the trail.

I tried a few, and even returned a Saris it just was not stable on my Touran, got a tow bar and a top of range Thule 3 bike rack, solid as a rock and you can open the boot, stand on it, and doesn't affect you fuel use. Only downside - about £500.

my mate has a saris, he bosted it up, said it was the best rack he ever seen ( he had seen mine )i was not that impressed, my thule clip-on is faster to attatch and more stable.really dont know how he thinks otherwise. bottom line, saris is good thule is better, just avoid straps if you can.

i dont think you should worry mate. after seeing boyh racks in action i can say you will be more than happy with the saris. well i have only seen the saris bones but it was an excellent rack, adjustable in evey way, i would reakon all saris will be great.p.s. if you ever find your self looking for a rack for a hatch back then go for the thule clip on.

I got an excellent reply from Thule.com saying that I should contact Thule Sweden at Thule.com....the mind boggles? Needless to say they received quite a curt reply, but I'll keep the clip-on in mind. I have every confidence in their gear I think it's just the staff which are quite possibly just (un)trained monkeys?

lol. i feel fortunate that i did not ever contact thule when i bought my rack. however you have jogged my memory. i looked to replace the rubber ties on my rack, (there quite important as they are what secure's your bike to the rack) i emailed thule to ask where i could get new ones from. i got no reply. i thought maybe they did not get my email, after reading your post i think maybe i am wrong. i will try again.

Yeah Maybe, (until you've had the top of range Thule on a tow bar)
I thought the Saris was sh1t.

Just bought a halfords advanced, works the same as the thule clip on, attaches to the boot and you pull on two levers to clamp it onto the boot, way more secure than my cheapy Argos job, and on offer at the moment in Halfords (1/3rd off). Check it out.

i saw one of the thule tow bar racks at hamsterely on sunday and it looked great. if i had a toe bar i would have 1.
i aint seen the halfords attempt at the thule clip on but i should imagine it will be as good.

Thanks Maca, think I will pop down to Hlafords for a fit guide. Saris have asked me to send pictures of my car - a much better response than Thule! I'll keep you posted. I have to agree with the Thule tow bar comments. If money wasn't an issue I'd fit a tow bar and go for it.

I bought the Bones about 4 years ago and it was spot on. Fitted it to a saloon (BMW 3 series) and then a hatch back (BMW 1 series) had to sell it when I got a 4x4 with a wheel on the back, but have to say I miss it so much I'm thinking about selling my Jeep and getting a car that I can fit a bones on to. Basically a Bones should fit on any car that has a bit of a platform at the bottom so the bottom 2 feet can sit.

I use a Thule roofrack, and leave it on all the time. Probably crap for fuel consumption, but zero faffing to lob the bike on for an after work trip. Also means you can't put the car through the carwash. The rubber feet can be swapped to fit different cars; Golf + at the moment, but been on a couple of others over the years. It's at least five years old now, and still solid.

Interweb is the best bet, as Halfords probably only have the bits for a small range.

SARIS got back to me within 24hrs of me sending them a photo of my car, very impressed! Unfortunately the the Bones RS will NOT work because of the glass on the hinge line. However, a Bones or any other bumper rack should work fine with the addition of hatch huggers on top and only using 2 bikes.
Looks like it's going to be a Bones 2 then.

I've still to hear back from Thule, but I shant be holding my breath - TW@TS

Thanks to everyone for their sage advice.
