Riding in East Anglia
      #1659 - 12/05/2008 23:55

Hi I recently moved to Cambridge for work and haven't been out on the bike for a while. Have you any suggestions? I have been reccomended Thetford forest, wondering if there was any other good spots.

Cheers
Ian

Thetford Forest is certainly your best starting point, and there’s some truly excellent trails there. After that, you’re at the mercy of local bridleways, perhaps stick your nose in your nearest shop to see if anyone can recommend anything. Remember that the Chilterns aren’t that much further than Thetford and there’s stacks of top-notch riding there. Perhaps grab a copy of Mountain Bike Rides in and around the Chilterns by MaxDarkins pb www.roughrideguide.co.uk. And of course, keep checking the forum.

My wife & I regularly ride in and around the Rendlesham/Tunstall forest areas (near the coast)

check out: http://www.trogmtb.co.uk/ for a local group doing some good stuff.

There is some reasonable riding nr Royston > Therfield, Icknield way to Baldock.

further west, Barton Hills Nr Hitchin is great.

Even further west & south, the Chilterns.. There is an MBR killer route from Stokenchurch on the M40, superb..

Hi I night-ride in cambridge with Cammtb www.cammtb.co.uk, if you come out soon you might be able to get away without lights if you don't have decent ones (you will need commuting ones at least to get back from the pub though), or post on the forum and you might be able to borrow a light.
I also ride in
Thetford (already mentioned), though I am not a big fan.
Woburn (nr Milton Keynes, about 1 - 1.5 hrs drive away)
North downs (nr Dorking, about 1.5 - 2 hrs away)
Aston Hill (Chilterns, about 1.5 hrs away)
Peaks (2.5-3 hrs away but worth it!)

There is also Chicksands (nearish woburn) and Epping forest.
