Anyone know what the score is when a farmer keeps his cows/calves on a public bridleway? I was in the middle of a sweet downhill section and i turn round the corner of the route to find the entire track blocked by cows and the like!
Gutted.
Is the farmer breakin the law by keepin his cows in the middle of this right of way?
Any ideas? Cheers peeps.

Hey itchy hows things?
Just found this bit on Bridleways in Hampshire (don't know if it is different in your part of the country?)
http://www3.hants.gov.uk/row/who-can-use.htm
As you can see it says, "There may also be a right to drive animals along a bridleway" I don't know if this means drive them as in "YeeHaa" driving or driving with a horse and Carriage? I think it means the latter!
I would contact your Local Authority by Email or Phone ( I think they are responsible for Bridleways?) and ask them if the Farmer is allowed to keep his cattle on the bridleway or use the Bridleway to move his cattle along it? If they do say he is allowed to move his cattle along it BUT not to just let his cattle graze on it then you could have a problem as its your word against his . You could try taking pictures with your phone (time stamp on the pictures) but this may not help to prove he wasn't with the cattle?
Hope this helps?

Just to add to that last post
After a little more digging it appears that cows CAN graze on land that a Right of Way passes through BUT this does not mention Bridleways just a Right of way!.
See here (its about 2/3 rds of the way down the page).
http://www.imba.org.uk/index.php?page=PRoW_FAQs
"Which cattle may graze fields which are crossed by rights of way ?
All cows are OK - although be wary of cows with calves All beef bulls such as Herefords or Aberdeen Angus are OK as they are normally quite placid .
The law makes it illegal to have a dairy bull such as a Jersey, Guernsey or Fresian bull in a field with a right of way, because they can be very aggressive."
Hope this also helps?

greetings. does the bridleway cross a field? if so who owns it cos if its classed as pasture the farmer has every right to graze his cattle on his land.always rermember a right of way can still be private land and the landowner has the right to use his own land for his own purposes ie his livleyhood.being a countryman myself i know a lot of farmers and foresters who are pig sick of "townies"who think they own the countryside.dont take this the wrong way mate but we are the visitors in someone elses back yard after all.

Basically no. He would have every right to graze his cattle in a field crossed by a right of way as long as they were all cows and calves or that any bulls among them were from beef breeds such as Herefords or Welsh Blacks etc. It is illegal to keep bulls from dairy breeds such as Jersey or Fresian in a field crossed by a right of way. Either way, proceed with caution whenever you pass a bull and take particular care with cows when there are calves present.
