Given that any kind of welding around that area might cause stress problems I'd say ooerr missus it don't look good, Greenie, DOC as our token metal stickers whadaya think??
If not it's down to the LBS with you, thinks I, for some candid advice.
Or, if it buggered then you got nowt to loose trying a bodge, weld or bond is the question.
Also what kind of hub was it so I never buy one myself...

Hi Gore , looks like you've had a bit of a bad weekend there mate  . From my experience I dont think that you are going to be able to do any sort of weld repair on it because of where it is and the shape of the dropouts (Alloys go brittle through the weld process and normally need to be heat treated post welding to restore there strength), driveside doesn't look to bad from the pic's but non-driveside looks a little the worse for wear. It does look like you could do something with it though. If it was mine I would smooth of the burrs (rough alloy) with a file and try a wheel on it to see if the dropouts will still line up , you may get away with putting a thin steel washer on either side of the axle to take up the space worn away by the old hub.If the frame is worn away so that the dropouts don't line up squarely you could try taking it down to your local bike shop and ask if they or a local fabrication shop would be able to machine the surface of the dropouts to allow you to fit a steel washer flush into the frame which you could then slot to make a new reinforced dropout. You'll be suprised what local fabrication shops in your area are able to do if you just ask the question - I use a local fabshop to make reinforced stainless steel pivot bosses so if you have a scout around you may be able to get this minor hiccup sorted pretty quick  .If you need anymore advise or a quick sketch of the above let me know mate.

Its just my spare bike (fortunatley).
It is still rideable. Would milling the frame out to take a 20mm axle.

Hi Gore ,
you won't be able to mill the rear out to take a 20mm axle mate as they are only used on the front so you can't get 20mm freehub bodys , the equivalent rear is 13mm so you could do that then get a 13mm rear hub and that should work. Just check first though mate to make sure before you take your black & decker to it LOL , your LBS will know for sure.

hi gore, thats a tough one, is the frame worth the hassle?
all i can think of is taking the frame to a machine shop and having a steel tappered washer made tp fit the tappered shape of the worn frame. basicly that will mechanicly fill the hole then you will fit your wheel and q/r as normal.
i cant really say if welding it up will work, i could fill it up and flush it off so it will all look normal but i dont know how it will react under stress. ali/alloy is not like other metals, its a bugger.
i suppose there will be some pro's out there who will know thw procedure to weld it, im not one of them.
