I have had my bike for about 6 months now and was looking at the pads the other day and wasn't sure if they needed replacing. Is there anyway I can tell?

See how much is left on the pads, take wheel out for better view, about .5mm is low, depending on the make they start with about 2mm. Also they may become inneffective or start grinding. It should be pretty obvious if you have a look.

Ditto MLC really,
You'll be amazed how little 'meat' you need on the pads and still have them effective but as before, get down to the .5mm smear and you should at least have a spare set in your pack or tool kit. One unxepected wet and gritty ride and you'll be through them quicker that you can say 'what's that squealing noice?'

just as sir-qu and midlife said. i went out to inerliathen and snapped my front brake so had to the other 2/3rds of the ride with the rear brake, boy did the pads go down fast, the last stage was done with no brakes.

actually it gets worse, i snapped my break on a part of the ride where the track takes a steep short and fast dip and leads straight into a big ass jump which a didnt notice in time.oops. i smashed my helmet, would have been my skull, really knacked my shoulder and snapped the break. still i carried on, the thing that hurt the most though were my hands from gripping onto the bars. well until i got to the car and the idrenelin slowed down. ouch!

Just look at them, usually when the seperating spring starts to get worn by the rotor it's about time, if there is a strange noise it too late.
Innerleithen, is 50% climb and 50% down, you must have been going fast uphill to do that. Claddon bank with no brakes, you must have enjoyed that rollercoaster ride then.

yeah your right, it does seem to climb for ever. i reakon it must have been somewhere near the top as i cant remember to much up hill afterwards. i did have a break, rear, it just got less and less effective and my hands got tighter and tighter on the grips. you seem to know the trail so you may know where i did it.
you kinda come out of single track to an opening, you can go a tight left and go round the top or straight down a drop along about 20 yrds and up,the up bit can be missed also by hanging a right (i think) i rode it again a few months ago and it seemed to be easier, the climb didnt seem to last as long and th downs were a lot faster this time.lol.
