Adjusting hydraulic disc brakes a newbie question!!
      #3626 - 25/06/2008 07:59

On my MTB are a pair of Shimano M485 hydraulic disc brakes. I feel the back brake requires a bit more pulling on the lever before biting than the front. Is there anyway of adjusting this? I don't think it could be worn pads but I haven't checked this I've only done about 150 - 200 miles on it so far.

I have printed out the tech docs from Shimano but it doesn’t really cover adjustment only topping up with oil and bleeding the system. As a newbie is this something I have to do or am I missing something? I really want the brakes to bite a bit sooner if that makes sense!!

i have avid juicys on my bike, to get a better biting point i take the wheel out and pull the brakes, this makes the discs tighter, you could try this but i don't know whether it would work on your shimanos....

hi ali, no you cant adjust it, its is self adjusting. my brakes feel the same, my sons brakes seem to bite as soon as the lever is touched, mine need pulling quite far in.

Only thing I can suggest is bleeding the pads closer to the discs to take up the pad wear, this WILL be a faff but if you really want to do it...

Get yourself a shim just a bit wider than your disc, insert this between the pads and bleed as normal, pads will shift out to touch shim, pistons will fill with fluid to take up slack and hey presto closer sitting pads.

Be warned you'll need to release fluid when you finally replace your pads.

Or, you could swap your pads out more frequently.
